Majid Tavakoli is an Iranian student leader born in 1986, and a former student at the Amirkabir University of Technology Teheran. Majid Tavakoli was the winner of the Student Peace Prize of 2013 because of his continued work towards allowing students right to participation and contribution in politics, despite the threat of his own safety. Tavakoli is still serving a nine-year-long imprisonment because of his criticism of the Iranian regime and his fight for democracy and human rights through speeches and publications. He was prisoned in 2009 as a result of the speech he held on the Iranian Student Day, where he criticized the government. There have been reports of excessive use of both violence and torture in the prison, but regardless of the bad conditions, Tavakoli has continued his work for people in Iran, by writing regime-critical letters from the prison.
